About the current Giraffe Project
Hi. I'm Wendy, a Masters student studying Animal Behaviour and its Applications for Conservation at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK. This project is in conjunction with African Impact through their 'volunteering in research' and 'photography' projects in Greater Kruger, South Africa and is assisted by The Giraffe Foundation.
Many volunteers and researchers have already done much hard work photographing and attempting to identify these giraffe as well as taking research notes on every sighting during many drives through the reserve. From September to November 2018 I was in South Africa collating, checking and adding to this work. The project will continue for several more months and I will be back next year to participate again and collect the final data set for analysis. I will then produce a report on it for my MSc Major Project and from African Impact. We are hopeful for a journal article publication at the end of the process too.
About the future African Wild Dog Project
This project is in the early stages but I plan to produce a PhD application later this year
and to start working on my PhD next year
I intend to study the factors (aside from good quality, well maintained fencing) that help keep African Wild Dogs from escaping from fenced Reserves and National Parks in KwaZulu Natal.
When dogs escape they encounter a hostile human-dominated environment where they are often persecuted or killed.
I intend to study the impacts of other carnivores and tourists within the Parks and the resident human communities around them.
This project will be undertaken in conjunction with WildlifeACT.
